The Bush Administration and Their Congressional Allies Plan to Radically Weaken Wildlife Protections Under the Endangered Species Act.
"As the House author of the Endangered Species Act, I am saddened to report that this cornerstone environmental law is in greater peril now than it has been in its 30 year history. Defending this common sense law will require a diligence the likes of which we have not witnessed before." - Congressman John Dingell (D-MI)
Recent Attempts to undermine the Endangered Species Act in Congress
H.R. 3824, Threatened and Endangered Species Recovery Act of 2005, from Rep. Richard Pombo (R-CA). This dangerous bill, adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives, would decimate the conservation of endangered species under the Endangered Species Act. Contrary to assertions by Rep. Pombo, the bill would undermine, not enhance, species recovery, and would cripple the Endangered Species Act. Learn more!
S. 2110, Collaboration for the Recovery of the Endangered Species Act, from Senator Crapo (R-ID). This bill does not pass the key test for any measure addressing the Endangered Species Act - whether it makes the recovery of listed endangered species more likely than under existing law. The bill introduced by Senators Crapo and Lincoln does not meet that test and is weaker than current law. Learn more! |
